Blood Drives

•American Red Cross Blood Drives open to the public: September 15 from 2 to 7 p.m. at the Woman of the Moose, 5709 Chili-Riga Road, Churchville; September 15 from 2 to 7 p.m. at the Gates Town Hall, 1605 Buffalo Road, Rochester. Blood donors must be healthy, at least 17 years old (16 with a NYS parental permission slip) and must weigh a minimum of 110 pounds. •AARP Driver Safety Classes are scheduled for Brockport at the West Avenue Fire House at 191 West Avenue, Brockport, sponsored by the Protectives Inc. of Brockport. •Adaptive Technology training provides hands-on instruction on the use of computers and specially designed software for people who are blind or visually impaired. Comprehensive training in computers and adaptive technology is provided through a series of classes at the Adaptive Technology Center at ABVI-Goodwill. Using ZoomText will be offered Tuesdays, September 9, 16, 23 and 30 from 1 to 3 p.m. Cost is $45.

•Antiques Class with Price Prazar, certified antiques appraiser, six-week classes beginning September 25 at the Seymour Library, 161 East Avenue, Brockport. The class, sponsored by the Western Monroe Historical Society, is held on Thursday afternoons from 1 to 3 p.m. Cost is $45 for Western Monroe Historical Society Members and $50 for non-members. •The Loaf and Ladle Community Kitchen serves free meals to all who are hungry for food and fellowship at St. Paul’s Church, Jackson Street and Main Street (Route 237), Holley, on Saturdays from noon to 2 p.m.

•Kendall Cub Scout Pack 3094 is having an Informational Night for any families in the area with boys in grades 1-5 to learn about scouting on Friday, September 19 from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. at St. Mark’s Roman Catholic Church, Kenmore Road, Kendall. •Messiah Lutheran Church’s men’s breakfast group will kick off the 2008/09 schedule on Saturday, September 13 at 8:30 a.m. in the church fellowship hall, at the corner of Mt. •Brockport Fire Department seventh annual Vigil “Never Forget” 9/11/01 will be held on September 11. Opening ceremony at 8 a.m (memorial bell tolls 5-5-5-5 at 8:47 a.m., uniformed honor guard commences); mid-day ceremony at noon with guest host Tony Infantino from WARM 101.3; closing ceremony at 7:30 p.m. with guest host Meghan Backus from WROC Channel 8 and a visit from NYS Fire Administrator Floyd Madison.

•Annual North Chili Quilt and Needlework Expo on September 19 from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. and September 20 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. (also Farmers Market September 20 from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m.), at the United Methodist Church, 2200 Westside Drive at Buffalo Road, North Chili. Over 200 quilts and handcrafted needlework projects on display with four vendors offering various types of needle arts and quilts. •Technology Fair on September 13 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Churchville-Chili Junior High School, organized by Stephanie Bischoping as part of Girl Scout Gold Award requirements. Robots for ABW is open to all ages and feature FIRST robots, a robotic operation table, hydrogen fuel cells and other technological advances. Those attending are asked to bring notebooks, journals or school supplies to donate to Alternatives for Battered Women (ABW) of Rochester.

•For the first reading of the semester, the Brockport Writer’s Forum hosts fiction writer Amy Bloom. The reading will be held in the New York Room, Cooper Hall, The College at Brockport, on Wednesday, September 10 at 8 p.m. Free and open to the public.

•GriefShare recovery seminar and support group will meet at Pearce Memorial Church on Thursday evenings from 7 to 8:30 p.m. from September 11 through December 4. The church is located at 4322 Buffalo Road in North Chili, one block east of routes 259 and 33. GriefShare features nationally recognized experts on grief and recovery topics. •The Ogden Historical Society Museum at the Pulver House, 568 Colby Street, has reopened for the season. Museum hours are Sundays from 2 to 4 p.m.

•Parma-Hilton Historical Society meetings resume Monday, September 15 at 7 p.m. at the group’s building on the grounds of Parma Park, 1300 Hilton-Parma Corners Road (Route 259).


Library Programs

•Registration for the fall session of Story Time is underway at the Newman Riga Library in Churchville. Story Time will be held on Tuesday mornings from 10:30 to 11 a.m. beginning Tuesday, September 30. Open to children ages three to five and registration is required. •Chili Carvers Group meets at the Chili Senior Center, 3235 Chili Avenue, every Wednesday from 9:30 a.m. to noon. These sessions are open to all seniors, carvers and non-carvers alike. There are no officers, no rules or bylaws and no dues. All members do is whittle and talk, according to representatives of the group.

•Hilton Apple Fest Committee meets Monday, September 8 at 7 p.m. at the Hilton Community Center, 59 Henry Street, Apple Fest Board Room on the second floor. Anyone interested in volunteering for the Apple Fest is invited to attend the meetings.

•Catholic Daughters Court Nativity #931 Brockport will hold their regular meeting, preceeded by a Tureen Supper, on Thursday, September 13 at 6:30 p.m. at Nativity Parish Center, 138 Main Street. Members should bring their table service and a dish to pass.

•Walk! Bike! Brockport Action Group’s next meeting will be on September 11 at 7 p.m. at the Seymour Library. The purpose of the meeting is to discuss walking/hiking trails in the western parts of Monroe County and how they can be implemented. Speaker will be Dave Wright, president of the Victor Hiking Trail organization. Open to the public.

Religion

•The Lutheran Church of Our Saviour, 2415 Chili Avenue, will begin its 2008-09 Sunday School year at 9 a.m. on Sunday, September 7. Pre-registration is not required and the classes are free. All children in grades 1-12 are welcome.

•Beginning Sunday, September 7 at 9:30 a.m. LifeQuest Community Church will be meeting at the Hilton Community Center every weekend. A series of messages called “Life: Don’t get caught short!” begins.

•The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints invites the community to worship Sunday, September 14 when services begin at 11:20 a.m. After the service, lunch and a tour of the meetinghouse will be provided at 4088 Lake Road (Route 19), Brockport, near East Avenue, one mile south of Ridge Road.

Seniors

•Riga Recreation offers a van trip to the Blue Cross Arena at the War Memorial for the Spirit of America performance. Tickets are free. Performances are Friday, September 12 at 10:30 a.m. and Saturday, September 13 at 2 p.m. The recreation van leaves the American Legion at 9:15 a.m. on Friday and 12:45 p.m. on Saturday. •Newcomers welcome to join Sweden Senior Singers, directed by Maryellen Giese. Choral group rehearses weekly and performs at nursing homes and senior facilities throughout the area. First rehearsal of the year is September 10 from 10 to 11:30 a.m., upstairs in the Sweden Senior Center, 133 State Street, Brockport. Come at 9 a.m. and join the Barbershop Ensemble.

•Mark Hare, columnist for the Rochester daily newspaper, will speak at the Northwest AARP meeting on Friday, September 19 at 1:30 p.m. at the Greece Town Hall. Topics will include politics, education and urban matters. Question and answer period will follow. Refreshments served.

Social & Professional

•Crafts, Community Service, Dinner and more with the Monroe County Home Bureau Cracked Pots (Spencerport area), the first and third Wednesdays at 10 a.m. from September through June. •The 2008-2009 Chili Art Group will begin regular Art Group meetings on September 11 with a business meeting and silent auction beginning at 7 p.m. in the Chili Senior Center, 3235 Chili Avenue, Chili. Use the rear door. Meetings are open to guests and guests are encouraged to join the CAG. Meetings are held on the second and fourth Thursdays from September through October, and on the second Thursday from November through February. Bi-monthly meetings resume in March and April. The Chili Art Group will mount an art show in the Community Room of the Pittsford Plaza Barnes & Noble until the end of September. Members will show original works in several media in this juried show. Works may be purchased. The show is free and open to the community. Membership in the CAG is open to the community. Dues are $25 per year. A portfolio is not required to join the group.

•Literacy Volunteers of Rochester has several one-hour preview sessions scheduled for anyone interested in becoming an adult literacy skills tutor. After attending a preview, you may participate in one of our training workshops. To become a tutor, it is not necessary to have prior teaching experience or knowledge of a foreign language.
